A restaurant only needs one word in their description to grab my attention. That word is tapas.

Located in the Casco Viejo section of Panama City, Tantalo offers tapas with a Panamanian flare.

Once we walked through the door, which was conveniently located only steps away from our hotel, Casa Sucre, we couldn’t help but be instantly drawn in by the décor.

There was art as far as the eye could see. Funky murals and tapestries dotted the walls. I was completely fascinated by the light fixtures composed of soda bottle caps.

I know more and more eating establishments are adding televisions or ipads with games and quizzes and such, but I say forget the televisions and ipads, add art, it’s more enjoyable to feast your eyes upon.

I appreciated Tantalo’s menu organization. It helped that is was split into categories like “the earth” and “the sea”. Although like always, we had a difficult time making choices, it helped to think, okay we’ll get one thing from this category, one thing from that…..

We ended up going with the octopus, the empanadas (because I can never say no to an empanada), the chorizo fondue, and the mixed grill.

Everything was tasty, but the chorizo fondue and mixed grill were the standouts. In fact, I would say that if you are going to eat at Tantalo, definitely get the mixed grill. It was a combination of grilled steak, chicken, and chorizo. The meats were perfectly grilled. The chimichurri sauce that came with it was great. Actually if places sold chimichurri sauce as a beverage, I might be tempted to drink it by the glass.

By the end of the meal we were stuffed. Since we already had two desserts earlier in the day, we gave dessert a pass.

We ventured up to the rooftop bar to catch a view of the city from above.

If we hadn’t endured a 2:30 am wake up call, a flight, and hours of walking around the city, it would have been a nice place to sit and leisure with a drink, but since we were already falling asleep in our chorizo fondue, we called it a night.

We loved our dinner at Tantalo. It was an excellent tapas restaurant that offered a feast for the stomach as well as the eyes.

I just had time for a walking tour of Casco Viejo but did notice so many places I would have liked to have stopped at. Tantalo sounds like a winner. Next time!

They were quite resourceful and creative in their designs. Using soda bottle caps to and make something out of it, very nice. The food looks good, by the way.
