After exploring and writing about ice cream in destinations visited, it seems about time to write about the ice cream in my home city, Philadelphia. After all, it’s where I eat ice cream the most. There are a multitude of options. I hope to cover as many as I can over time, but for the present moment, it’s time to eat some Philadelphia Ice Cream.

Milk House (37 S 19th Street)

Milk House serves up delicious sundaes and shakes. I already know I will have to go back, because I  struggle to pick which sundae I want. There are multiple peanut butter choices.

Conquering the menu from top to bottom seems to be a good strategy, so we get the PB & J sundae .

The sundae is more than enough to share. The peanut butter and jelly toppings blend well. It tastes like elementary school lunch in ice cream form.

I know this post is about ice cream, but I need to give a shout out to my Milk House Philly Steak grilled cheese sandwich. It is tasty and made great pre-Philadelphia Ice Cream eating.

Little Baby’s Ice Cream (Fishtown-2311 Frankford Ave.) (NOW CLOSED)

I love Little Baby’s because they think outside of the ice cream box. They are known for their creative ice cream flavors, but don’t worry, if you aren’t down with Pizza flavored ice cream, there is always the Speculoos (chocolate cookie). They change their flavors up quite a bit, so there is always a new taste sensation to try.

Once again, because of my peanut butter addiction, I get the flavor that containes peanut butter. It is called Ants on the Log, and is composed of celery flavored ice cream, peanut butter, and raisins. Flavor is mind over matter. I tell my brain that celery is a perfectly acceptable flavor for ice cream. The celery ice cream is quite refreshing and the light flavor pairs well with the salty peanut butter and sweet raisins. The other flavor I try, is Cherry Hibiscus. It is like eating a summer day, lightly sweet and wistful. I highly recommend the Cherry Hibiscus for those with a less adventurous palate.

Shannon gets a favorite of Little Baby’s customers, the Bourbon Bourbon Vanilla. He also picks the Cherry Hibiscus.

The whole shop has a quirky feel, ice cream included, so visit Little Baby’s for a nice combination of ice cream and fun.

Ice Land (Chinatown-224 N. 10th Street)

Originally, I thought about writing an entire post on the rolled Philadelphia Ice Cream places we try. They are popping up everywhere.

It isn’t just the adorable bear logo that endears me to Iceland. Whatever they put in their ice cream mixture, makes their flavors pop. Some of the rolled ice cream shops incorporate toppings into the mix before the rolls are complete. Others keep their rolls to one flavor, and put the toppings only on the top. I prefer the places that incorporate the toppings into the rolls, and then put even more yummy toppings on the top. That is what Ice Land does.

I can’t resist coffee ice cream, topped with caramel, and Kit Kats, so I order the Morning Roast.

Shannon gets the photogenic S’mores. Look at that beauty.

Whether you’re already a fan of rolled ice cream, or you’re looking to give it a try, head to Ice Land.

Weckerly’s Ice Cream

Now for full disclosure, I am a Weckerly’s fangirl. They are a great addition to the Philadelphia Ice Cream scene.

Weckerly’s also operates two ice cream shops in the city. One shop is located near our favorite BBQ place, Fette Sau.

Though you can get scoops at Weckerly’s, my absolute favorite thing to get, is an ice cream sandwich. They have fantastic, inspired, combinations, that take advantage of fresh, local, seasonal ingredients.

Two of my recent favorite seasonal flavors are the Chocolate Covered, Roasted Strawberry Ice Cream Sandwich, and the Caramelized Banana Ice Cream between Banana Bread.

Given its proximity to dairy farms in the Pennsylvania countryside, Philadelphia Ice Cream is an ice cream enthusiast destination.

It’s hot here today, so I am looking rather longingly at this post. Never heard of rolled ice cream before – how do they do that? With you on the peanut butter obsession. Clearly I need to come to Philadelphia.

Those ice cream sandwiches look incredible. And anywhere with a good milkshake gets my business. I have to do an ice cream crawl through Philly!

    Holy Deliciousness Batman!
Those are definitely some “cool” places I am going to need to check out when I head back to the US. Definitely, check out the Franklin Fountain while you are in Philly. They honestly have the greatest ice cream in the world and it is such a cool building!

I love Franklin Fountain. They have the best Peanut Butter Ripple that I’ve had so far. I’ll fit them in for sure in a future installment. Their candy shop next door has hot chocolate that keep meaning to try too.

Philadelphia’s food scene is so good! I visited on December and loved every bit of it. It was a bit cold for ice cream (but I compensated with donuts) but would like to go back and try all these ice cream shops. Roasted strawberries, yum! #WeekendWanderlust

As a definite foodie, I’m so grateful to live somewhere with great food. Especially somewhere with a great, creative, variety. I could probably eat out everyday and still never eat everywhere

I think I just gained 10 lbs. from reading this! I love finding local ice cream places both at home and while traveling. I tend to stick to the basics – cookies and cream, vanilla, or strawberry – but I once make the mistake of trying camembert ice cream in France, and it was AWFUL! 🙂 #weekendwanderlust

Camembert ice cream does sound terrible. I’m not sure I’ve a really terrible flavor yet, but I’m sure I’ll eventually come across one, especially because I like a least trying weird flavors.
