Morning on Coiba Island-Panama

We are up at sunrise, and what a spectacular sunrise it is.

We’re not avid bird watchers, more avid animal of any kind watchers, so when the opportunity arises to go on a bird watching hike, it sounds like the makings of a wonderful morning.

Light continues to seep into the sky as our skift makes its way to the penal colony, turned National Park, Coiba Island.

It looks like we are approaching a movie set. The color of the water is a dazzling turquoise.

Our guide for the morning is Liza. She is excellent at spotting birds (I don’t have a zoom lens so I have no bird pictures).

Every so often Liza has us stop and quietly listen. There are so many birds singing. The air is alive with the sound of a beautiful chorus.

It’s a humid, sweaty, hike, so Liza encourages us to take a beach break. We refill our water bottles and have a rest.

Liza finds a mango tree. She picks and peels fresh mangoes for us. They are juicy and sweet.

Refreshed and relaxed, we make our way to the lookout point.

I’ve never seen a cashew tree before. I am fascinated.

Tito the Crocodile is away running whatever kinds of errands crocodiles run, so he’s not hanging out on his beach today.

This guy (or girl, I’m not really sure) finally gives us our reptile fix. I love the blue markings.

As we approach the lookout path, we spot an agouti. He sniffs around looking for snacks. I love how excited everyone in the group gets. There is not a single person who is bored and/or unimpressed.

The tree trunk steppers on Coiba Island are really cool. I have fun jumping from circle to circle.

At the lookout point we’re greeted with a lovely view,

and a troop of white faced monkeys.

Liza makes sure we keep a safe distance as she recognizes one of the monkeys as a territorial, alpha male. Fortunately, the monkeys only seem interested in having a peek at us, and then going on their way.

The rest of the morning on Coiba Island is spent chilling on the beach. We enjoy the water, and the spectacular views, then we head back to the boat to gear up for an afternoon of snorkeling.

First time hearing about Coiba Island, it seems wonderful! The turquoise water is just stunning, and I love how much wildlife the island has to offer. Panama wasn’t on my bucket list before, but I’m certainly adding it now!

I love Panama. There is so much diversity in the activities you can do. You can be somewhere popular and crowded or somewhere where you are the only one on the beach

I’m a huge lover of wildlife. I love places where I can see animals roaming around freely.

Looks like a wonderful island and experience. I’ve never been officially birding.

It was a wonderful morning, peaceful and quiet, except for the birds and monkeys.

That reminds me so much of the islands in Krabi Thailand. That is a great spot that I’ll have to get to one day.

I loved how low key and peaceful the island felt. I’ll have to check out Krabi someday.
